. . . chagrined and absolutely mortified that Kanye West was brought up by an English professor? He is a grown man, of course, whose actions are no one’s fault but his own. Perhaps childhood exposure to incessant grammar-correcting, piles of books and the oppressive culture they represent, not to mention the small-stakes politicking that comes with chairing a department, did a number on young Kanye? Perhaps. I mean, whiskey tango foxtrot. Get well, fella.

Hell, I didn’t know that. But his slow, incoherent, pathetic attempt at an apology was shameful. The guy’s a rapper — he’s clearly adroit with the language — but I guess that performance was intended to signal that his shame was authentic? Mostly, for me, it was painful to watch.

I didn’t catch the apology. The still picture I saw of the Leno appearance was eloquent in conveying his discomfiture, but not enough to make me want to track down the clip. The one apology I really wish I could have heard is Joe Wilson’s to Raum Emanuel. That was probably painful, too.
The late Frau Professor Dr. West chaired the English department at Chicago State University some years back. I think her training was actually in English Education, which is a little different.
